With audiences splintering across more and more media platforms, technology is redefining the role of the news consumer - endowing individuals with more control of information and greater responsibilities. In nearly every sector except ethnic news, audiences are searching for - and finding - new media options.

This is one of the major conclusions in the fourth annual "The State of the News Media," a study produced by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
